Start with the child in front of you

Children with the same diagnosis can communicate, learn, move and respond in very different ways. A useful support plan starts with the individual child: what they enjoy, how they communicate and what helps them feel secure enough to try.

Families bring essential knowledge. Professionals bring specialist skills. The strongest relationship treats both forms of knowledge with respect.

Questions families can ask

Ask a professional how goals are chosen, how progress is explained, how the family can take part and what happens if an approach does not feel right. Clear answers are part of respectful support.

A family should also feel able to ask for simpler language, more time, a second opinion or a different approach. Partnership includes room to question.
